San Francisco Photo Walk
I spent this past Thursday on a photo walk through San Francisco with Matt, Olga, John, and Stephanie. It was a blast. We wandered from the Powell St. BART station up through Nob Hill and Russian Hill, Over to North Beach, and then down Telegraph Hill back through the Financial District to Market Street.
I shot over 300 photos and culled those down to 33 I've posted.

Dancing With the Fountain
For some reason, this fountain captured our attention. That's Grace Cathedral in the background.
Close Up
A tight shot of John, across the fountain, taking his shot of the fountain. I like the crisp and shallow depth of field on this one and the freezing of that stream of water.
Stages
I'm not thrilled with the composition of this shot. It was in an awkward location, but I would've preferred the rose that's in bloom to be a little more centered and the bud in the foreground to not be cut off. Oh well.
I do like the macro effect and the softness of the background. I'm pretty sure this was taken with the 55-200mm Nikkor lens.

Stained
The stained glass windows in Grace Cathedral are fantastic. The D40 picks up the colors like no body's business.
Purple Trumpets
Don't know what type these little flowers are, but we found them in a little alley in Nob Hill.
The City
From a great spot on the (very steep) eastern slope of Nob Hill. A great view of downtown San Francisco framed by the trees of this residential street.
Rungs
This photo is a little disorienting becuase the lines point in all different directions. A pair of ladders is leaning against a brick wall. They're on the slope of a hill and the camera is close against 'em.
Mini Park
This mini park is about a quarter of a city block, almost entirely paved in asphalt, and dominated by that shack (that houses a power tranformer or something equally unpleasant). It does, however, have an outrageously small table and pair of benches tucked into the back corner (behind the shack).

Alley or Driveway?
A skinny little house, set way back between two much larger buildings. Gotta love finding little gems like this.
Looking Down on the Marina
You can see Alcatraz out in the bay as well as fog rolling in further back. I do like all the lines running downhill.

This Means You
In an alley in Russian Hill. Couldn't resist the scene. The b/w and some contrast enhancement were done post.
Charger
We came upon this well maintained Charger in Russian Hill. I like the tight depth of field on the logo and the curve of the window frame.
Wild Parrot
There were a few of these green and red parrots squawking as we descended Telegraph Hill. This one held still long enough for a decent photo.
Hummingbird in Action
I got a handful of shots as this hummingbird forraged near the road. Yeah, it's just brown, no fancy colors, but I particularly like the feet in the bottom shot.
Sam The Square
This guy sits above the entrance to a federal government building in the financial district. The sculpture is a little too fascist for my taste.
Lots of Windows
That's the Transamerica Building looming overhead. The shot was taken just outside a small courtyard formed by these three buildings. There's quite a lot of vertical space to cover in this shot.
Mr. Chris P. Fry
Found on the side of a delivery van in the financial district - some kind of restaurant supply & service company. Who wouldn't like Mr. Fry?
Phelan Building
This is the last of the PhotoWalk pictures.
One of the classic triangular buildings on Market Street. At the end of a long day, the sun's not ideal, but I like the shape.

Back to San Diego
Back again, this time for a friend's wedding. Had some time Friday night for a nice dinner in La Jolla with this view out over the bay.

Sunday brunch at the Crab Catcher restaurant required a little...motivation. This worked. Pretty darned tasty, too.

Sunny San Diego
This batch of photos came from San Diego, where we celebrated Cinco de Mayo in margaritas in old town.

Today's Catch of Guitars
Such a colorful string of mini guitars. I'm not convinced this is the best framing I could've found, but it was early in the day and I'm still getting used to the 55-200 lens.
Waiting for the Perfect Wave
There was a surf comeptition going on as we passed the beach. They had their own photographer. She had a serious telephoto lens.

Impala
Part of a car show in old town for the celebration. The interior was nice on this one, but I really like this name detail on the long red panel.
Dark Stars
D and I have been admiring these tin star lamps for a few years now, but haven't figured out a way to transport them back up North. The depth of field and crisp focus of the D40 really makes this photo.
Drum and Bass
The rhythm section from the stage band. Gotta like his hat. I think they were in the middle of a Santana song.

You see flower sellers in the popular bars in SF, too. But this guy selling roses in a margarita bar in old town presented quite a contrast. to his surroundings.

Squint Into the Sun
