It's all about the light. This photo was taken in the early evening and shows off some nice contrast between shadows and highlights. The colors are very vivid (credit goes to the camera, no post-processing for this one). I also like the playfullness of the composition. The camera was actually resting on the trunk, looking up. The branches point in all different directions, but it seems to fit well in the frame. I also like the play of filled versus empty spaces in the cells created by the branches. There's a not-quite-symmetrical thing going on.

Frame
The gallery for the Ashes and Snow exhibit is constructed from corrugated metal shipping containers. The effect is quite striking and worthy of the many photos that have been taken of it. I was drawn to this view of the Santa Monica sky framed by the containers here.
If I have more time to return to this shot, I'd like to do something else with the cropping. I doubt that a 1x1 would be appropriate because the frame is not a square. But, in this case, the just off centered look is a bit distracting.
I do like the colors, though. Soft and contrasty.

Weather
The clouds cooperated. Shot this one walking from the parking lot. It was a little to overcast to get the powerful lighting I was hoping for, so this has an unintentional ominous tone to it. Especially 'cos the building looks like a church.
Vines
I had to add at least one of the pastoral wine country scenes from this batch. here the tree sets off the image. I would've preferred lighting from behind, but as it was noon-ish, I had to take what I could get.
Looking Out
Another trip to the wine country. The green fields of grapes and puffy clouds can get boring after a while, so I was glad to spy this view. The tables drawing your eye towards the middle of the frame; the figure set just off center and looking away wistfully; the turbulent cloud backdrop; lots of space for the sky.

Hide and Seek with the Transamerica Building
Walking up though the Financial District from Market Street, I got the distinct impression that the Transamerica Building was playing hide and seek with me. It kept popping out from behind other buildings. I tried to capture some of that feeling in this shot.
Sailing the Bay
Down by the Ferry Building again and the sailboat caught my eye. I waited for it to draw closer. In an ideal picture, it would be much further in the foreground, playing off the white of the clouds. But this one had to do, since lunch was calling.
Oaklandish
Took a bunch of shots out the sunroof on my way home. The clouds were calling again. I like the line of the elevated BART track on the left-side contrasting with the puffy shapeless clouds. I would prefer the street to be empty of cars, the tree and streetlight gone, and the foreground a little brighter, but hey.
On The Fence
It was dark leaving the restaurant in Napa, but the fence had these little lights strung across. I like the halos that show around the lights themselves, but also the large negative space (black) in the upper-right.
